About the artwork

Fan artwork depicting the first stage of Super Mario Bros. in ink and markers.

Story behind the artwork

This piece translates the familiar opening level of the game into a hand-drawn A4 composition. I had the first idea for this drawing already in 2020 and sketched loads of random Mario items on a paper, and then let it sit until 2024 in a shelf. After re-discovering it, and after leveling up my marker skills, I decided to make those random things come to life in an all original composition. It even contains some big mistakes, like Bowser not even having his back-shell. It also mixes in more objects than actually exists in the first Mario-game, like the Shy-guy and the colored hills in the background. I love to hide 'errors' like this as only a true fan of the series will spot that.
